4.2.1 Purpose:
To establish, implement and maintain
the Health, Safety and Environmental Policies for Laurel
Steel.
4.2.2
Scope & Company Profile:
These policies apply to all health,
safety and environmental aspects or risks, resulting from
the manufacturing and distribution operations of Laurel
Steel.
Laurel Steel, a division of Harris
Steel Group began in 1967 with a small plant in Stoney
Creek, Ontario. The original plant provided wire accessory
products for the rebar industry in which Harris was, and
still is, a major participant. This plant continued to grow
as a manufacturer of wire and wire products (accessories and
concrete reinforcing mesh) and in 1977 also started
producing Cold Finished Bar.
In 1979, having outgrown the Stoney
Creek facilities, the firm moved to the present
21.5 acre
location in Burlington, Ontario. Here Laurel Steel enjoyed
rapid growth, particularly in the area of Cold Finished Bar.
The plant was expanded 7 times to its current 350,000 square
feet including covered raw material
storage.
The
principle operation in the plant including rod storage and
cleaning (pickling and shot
blasting), cold finished bar,
wire and mesh manufacturing, automated CFB storage and
retrieval, and shipping.
4.2.3 Responsibility:
It is the responsibility of the
Management Team of Laurel Steel to establish, implement and
maintain the Health, Safety, and Environmental Policies. All
employees, and others working on behalf of Laurel Steel, are
responsible to assist in maintaining these policies.

ENVIRONMENTAL
POLICY
At Laurel
Steel, we are committed to the protection of the
environment. We believe this is an important principle
if we are to be successful as individuals and as a
company. This policy statement is intended to outline
the measures we will take to meet our commitment to the
Environment.
1.
We recognize that taking proactive steps to
prevent accidents and pollution is the right thing to do
and commit to reducing accidents, emissions and
generated wastes and consumption of
resources.
2.
We will commit to comply with or exceed
applicable laws and regulations, standards, codes and
by-laws for the Environment. When appropriate, we will
develop standards of our own, which may go beyond
minimum legal requirements.
3.
We commit to the principles of employee
involvement, consultation and accountability at all
levels of the organization.
4.
We will make Environmental considerations a
priority in our business plans, work practices,
operations, and new developments. The Environment is a
company wide responsibility. As such, it is the
responsibility of the Management Team to make the
Environment an important priority and commit the
necessary resources to achieve our objectives. Employees
and contractors at all levels are expected to carry out
their responsibilities and cooperate towards success in
these efforts.
5.
We will promote communication amongst employees,
those working on behalf of Laurel Steel, and the public
so that the Environment is integrated throughout the
organization.
6.
We will develop ongoing training and awareness
programs to ensure employees and contractors understand
their roles and responsibilities, in sustaining good
environmental practices.
7.
We will review
our actual performance against established Environmental
objectives and targets, and use internal audits to
verify our commitment to best practices and continual
improvement.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
POLICY
The successful
management of our health and safety policies,
programs and procedures for all employees is
the first priority for all
managers and supervisors. This occupational
Health and Safety Policy applies to all of the
operations and activities of Laurel Steel. The
maintenance of safe working conditions and the
successful management of our health and safety
policies are of the utmost importance to Harris
Steel Group and Laurel Steel.
It is our
responsibility to ensure we provide a healthy and
safe work environment for all employees. This shall
be accomplished by complete compliance with all
Occupational Health and Safety laws, including
Regulations and Standards. We will meet this
objective by carefully executing our work following

policies established by management and joint health
and safety committee recommendations and will be
held accountable to meet these individual
requirements. Each manager and supervisor will
be held accountable for their actions and
responsibilities for employees under their
supervision.
Harris Steel Group
and Laurel Steel ensure their supervisors and
all levels of management are held accountable.
All employees
are required to work in compliance with
established safe work practices and procedures and
held accountable for their
actions.
The success of our
Health and Safety Program will depend on the
dedication, participation and personal connection to
safety excellence by all managers, supervisors and
employees. Together we can and must achieve the
safest possible environment for everyone.
